Women Development Cell (W.D.C.)

The aim and objectives of the W.D.C. is to prevent sexual harassment and to promote the general well-being of female students, teaching and non-teaching women staff at workplace on the university and college campus. The cell also undertakes awareness programmes on gender sensitization, women rights and women empowerment in university campus and colleges.

‘Sakhi Box’


As per the circular received from the University of Mumbai (Ref. no. WDC/130 of 2019) Dated 4th July 2019 and as directed by the Ministry of Women & Child Development. Our college has installed a “Sakhi Box” in our Campus for complaints against ‘Gender Discrimination’. The WDC of our college regularly checks the ‘Sakhi Box’ to look for any complaints (if any) pointed out by our girl students.

Sanitary Napkin Distribution Project held on 16th March, 2022

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Women Development Cell of our College had organised a “Sanitary Napkin Distribution Project” in the adopted Devipada village of Aarey Colony, Goregaon East on 16th March, 2022. 

Menstrual Hygiene is not just about spreading awareness about sanitation to marginalized and poor women, it is actually about providing them the means which will help them in maintaining the menstrual hygiene.

The student volunteers of WDC were strongly prompted towards bringing a sustainable change by creating awareness related to menstrual hygiene among the adolescent girls  and use of high quality reusable sanitary napkins. 

In order to achieve the above objective ‘Quality reusable sanitary napkins’ were distributed in the above adopted village.

Poster Making Competition on : ‘Women Empowerment’ held on 8th March, 2022

On the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March, 2022, the N.S.S. & W.D.C. Club held a ‘Poster Making Competition’ for the students on the theme “Women Empowerment” to honour the social, economic and cultural achievements of women from all walks of life.

30 students had participated in the competition with immense zeal and enthusiasm, expressing their perception & thoughts through slogans, paintings and sketches. Observing these young minds create and show their ideas on paper was a fantastic experience. The students were also happy to get an opportunity to express their feelings on the ‘International Women’s Day.’

'Unequal Equality - Understanding the Matter of Gender Discrimination in India'

‘Wisdom Webinar Series –II’ on ‘Unequal Equality – Understanding the Matter of Gender Discrimination in India’ was held on 2nd March, 2021 on Zoom.

The resource person for the webinar was Dr. Madhu Kelkar, Associate Professor from H.R. College.

Dr. Madhu Kelkar elaborated on the quantitative and qualitative aspects of discrimination faced by women generally across India. She gave examples of patriarchal norms that are depicted from early literature which have marked women as inferior to men. And this discrimination continues in every aspect. Be it education, health, protection or participation, the girl child is always treated unequally. 

She emphasized the need of the hour is to make a change in the mindset of the society and destroy the prejudices that damage the future of the girl child.

International Webinar on “Women’s Health : The Balancing Art” was held on 8th March, 2021 on Zoom. 

The resource person for the webinar was Dr. Mohini Vachhani – Gynaecologist and Obstetrician practicing in U.K.

Dr. Mohini Vacchani elaborated on the maintenance of hygiene during menstruation to prevent infections and on the use of certain types of products related to menstruation and the precautions to be taken during this phase. She also dealt with the myths and facts associated with menstruation. 

The participants raised several queries regarding the problems faced by them. This was a very informative session that improved the knowledge of the participants from different age groups to educate them on Menstrual hygiene & wellness on International Women’s Day.

Webinar Series on ‘Gender Equity and COVID-19 : Perspectives from the Margins’

National Webinar on ‘Gender Equity’ by Women Development Cell in collaboration with University of Mumbai W.D.C.

G.D. Jalan College of Science, Commerce & Arts in association with the W.D.C. of University of Mumbai, hosted a National Level Webinar on ‘Dalit Stand Points’ on 12th June, 2020 as a part of their three-day National Webinar Series on ‘Gender Equity and COVID-19 : Perspectives from the Margins’. The National Level Webinar Series was aimed at raising important questions pertaining to the impact of COVID-19 on marginalized sections of the society. This webinar focused on discussions around the impact of the pandemic on ‘Dalit community’. The resource person for the webinar was Dr. Smita Patil an Assistant Professor in School of Gender & Development Studies, IGNOU, New Delhi and Dr. Joseph M.T. They stressed on social distancing to be followed strictly during COVID-19 pandemic, even though humanitarian touch is the ultimate medicine for any ailment. The webinar was graced by the presence of honourable Vice-Chancellor of University of Mumbai, Prof. Suhas Pednekar who wished and applauded the organizers for organising the webinar during the lockdown.
